"Modeling a channel migration corridor for the 59-mile segment of the Missouri National Recreation River", funded by the National Park Service. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Responsibilities will include the following: (25%) Writing new C++ code to implement a published river meandering model; (25%) Writing a report describing the feasibility of delineating the migration corridor of the MNRR with a river meandering model as described above and recommendations for future work; (20%) Incorporating that code within the Channel-Hillslope Integrated Landscape Development model (CHILD), which is written in C++, to replace an existing river meandering model; (20%) Completing a preliminary calibration of the meandering model for the Missouri National Recreation River (MNRR) using historical data; Some travel (one field trip to the MNRR) is required; (10%) Assessing the feasibility of using the model to predict a river migration corridor by running the model forward in time for 100 years. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The proposed tasks performed will consist of: * Porting the current 2006 CHILD C++ code to OS X 10.4-10.5 under gcc 4.0.1+. * Verifying operation of this code with existing inputs. * Replacing the current meandering code with new C++ code written to implement the technique described in Johannesson and Parker, 1989. * Calibrating the new model using data from USGS data set 2006-5313. * Creating additional software tools (not necessaily in C++) for performing calibration as required. * Performing a 100 year simulation of the MNRR using the calibrated and initialized model. * Presenting the work and results in a written PDF report suitable for publication. * Hosting the tools, data, and report at a public website. If possible, also: * Replacing the Matlab-based graphical output with (free) platform-independent tools, not necessarily in C++. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ A proposed timetable and schedule is: Phase Description Date completed ----- ----------- -------------- 1.
