"Determining valley-bottom sediment volumes", funded by ???. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ This project is short-term and is expected to take ony 1-2 months of part-time work. Its primarily goal is the creation of software tools necessary to solve the geometric problems required to perform partial volume estimates (e.g. of sediment contained between ground surfaces and bedrock planes) using digital elevation model (DEM) and other geographic information system (GIS) data sets as boundaries of these volumes. All software is to be written using Python 2.5.2, Numpy 1.0.4, and WxPython 2.8.7.1. In addition to solving the sediment volume problem, these tools will be available as library components of primitive operations for the solution of other geometric GIS problems. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Proposed tasks will consist of, as required: * Reading and displaying DEM and other GIS files. * Extracting surfaces, planes, cross-sections, contours and other curves, and other geometric elements from data files. * Calculating intersections of geometric elements (e.g. surfaces and planes). * Calculating slopes and tangents of surfaces and curves, and angles between geometric elements. * Merging geometric elements into composites (e.g. 2 planes or surfaces). * Calculating centroids, centerlines, and path lengths of geometric elements. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ A proposed timetable and schedule is: Phase Description Date completed ----- ----------- -------------- 1a.
